Enter the Serpent…(& evil)
Now as you enter chapter 3 of Genesis you find another character enter the garden of bliss and this helps us to understand the spiritual arena that we find ourselves in today.
It is clear from the dialogue with the woman and the serpent that the serpent works against God, causes the woman to doubt, tells lies, entices and deceives. The bible does not clearly indicate this here but does so later, that this is the work of Satan or the Devil.
Genesis 3:6 ‘When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her and he ate it.’ Further to this story we read that ‘Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man, ‘Where are you?’
It is important to note the following in the progress of this story: Man and woman both rebelled against the command that God had given. This act of rebellion brought a new dimension into their relationship, they were now afraid to meet with God! While God knows all things, he still calls out to man- ‘Where are you?’
