Another book in the Bible says ‘God has put eternity into the hearts of men.’ (Ecclesiastes 3:11) This reality of being ‘a spiritual person’ forms the basis of all our understanding about relating to God.
As you read on in Genesis you find that God provides a wonderful garden for man and woman to live in and they are able to enjoy the fruit of this garden for their daily needs. It is clear from the first few chapters of Genesis that a relationship existed between mankind and God. There is an ongoing dialogue between man, woman and God. There is also clear provision for the daily needs by God. Something God also gives man however is a command in chapter 2:16 ‘And the Lord God commanded the man, You are free to eat from any tree in the garden but you must not eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil for when you eat of it you will surely die.’ It is important to pause here and think about this. A relationship with God existed and this was based on being spiritual and following God’s commands and purpose. We will develop this further later.
